Remodelers & Green Building Council September Meeting

Article presented by Jacque Wirth of SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS of Brevard, Inc.

Our thanks to Dave Armstrong of Armstrong Custom Homes (HBCA board member and past president), the featured speaker for our August 25th Remodelers’ & Green Building Council meeting. Recently re-elected to the FGBC (Florida Green Building Coalition) board of directors, Dave gave our attendees a review of the FGBC’s certification program and residential energy efficiency as it relates to our members.

The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) is a nonprofit 501(C)3 Florida corporation dedicated to improving the built environment. Their mission is to lead and promote sustainability with environmental, economic, and social benefits through regional education and certification programs.

The FGBC was conceived and founded in the belief that green building programs will be most successful if there are clearly defined and measurable principles on which “green” qualification and marketing are based. They are a membership-based organization governed by a Board of Directors and corporate officers who are elected by the general membership.

The FGBC educates contractors, developers, local governments, and consumers about various ways to build healthier, more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient buildings – specifically in Florida’s unique climate.

All in attendance likely came away with Dave’s core message, which was loud and clear, “If you aren’t providing your building and remodeling clients with viable options for energy efficiency and sustainability, you better get educated, because your peers in the construction industry are moving full-speed ahead – with or without you”.

For more information on the FGBC, visit their website: www.FloridaGreenBuilding.org.

Everyone enjoyed a hearty salad buffet lunch thanks to our local LOWE’S of W. Melbourne and their trade partners, Valspar Paint.

To be a part of the valuable networking and educational opportunities this council offers, please join us for our next lunch meeting, Thursday, September 22nd @ 12 pm in the HBCA Auditorium (1500 W Eau Gallie Blvd. Melbourne).
