  • Electric Cars - Remodeling the Way We Drive Member

Article submitted  Jacque Wirth of SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS of Brevard, Inc.

Michael Cornelius of Cornelius Electrical Contractors was our guest speaker and lunch sponsor for the September 29th Remodelers & Green Building Council Meeting. He delivered an informative overview of some of the most popular models of electric vehicles (EVs), current charging options, the newest design and safety improvements, as well as some of the differences between the various manufacturers’ models. Mike and his associate, Eric Nimer of Aerovironment, educated our council members and guests and answered questions about the technology surrounding the cars that are “remodeling” and “greening” the future of transportation.

Michael explained that charging points to support the growing popularity of Electric Vehicles are popping up all over the nation. Under the US Transportation Electrification Initiative, over 22,000 charging stations will be available in residential, commercial, and public locations by December 2013. The Department of Energy announced a $5 million fund for local governments and private companies to accelerate the installation of EV charging stations and related infrastructure. Cornelius is licensed, experienced, and equipped to handle the installation of these on-site charging points on new construction and retrofits. “There two basic types of residential charging points”, he said, “The Level 1 charger requires 120vac with a 20 amp standard outlet, and Level 2 requires 240vac and a 40 amp fixed installation.”

According to Cornelius, EV charging stations are becoming part of many planned communities, and are now being included in common areas of campuses and office buildings. As a network of developers, builders, and contractors, we need to stay on top of this technology, and begin planning for ways to incorporate the needs of EV clients into our home and commercial building designs.  For installation or more information about these charging stations, please contact Mike at 321-674-9667 or visit his website at www.corneliuselectric.com
