Green building brings together a vast array of practices and techniques to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. But effective green buildings are more than just a random collection of environmental friendly technologies. They require careful, systemic attention to the full life cycle impacts of the resources embodied in the building and to the resource consumption and pollution emissions over the building's complete life cycle. The Green Building Council will define and apply their standards to local building.

May's Green Building Council Article- Gary Eggers
Thanks to all of the Green Building Council members and supporters for another great monthly meeting. A special thanks to Robert Zubowicz of Heartland Technologies for sponsoring lunch and for his informative presentation. Robert has been involved in the home automation business for over 12 years. His topic, “Green Automation”, focused on technology for energy management systems for residential and commercial applications. From lighting to Smart Thermostats, Robert presented systems that can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Robert is also conducting some experiments with several different systems in a residential setting in Titusville, and will report back to us when his final results are in. Thank you again Robert.
Green Building Publication update: Jerry Cherry brought us up to speed on the progress of the magazine. The target population would be families with household incomes of $100,000 and would have an initial mailing of 9,000 magazines. A sponsorhip of $17,000 annually would include a one time cover, a centerfold ad when you are on the cover, and an editorial page. Jerry also mentioned the need for bylines relating to your program or business, but not specifically related to your particular company. The first issue is still planned for September, so anyone interested in a sponsorship or advertising, please contact Jerry through the HBCA office.
Bob Farr spoke to us about membership in the ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) and the benefits of belonging to this organization. Cost is $75/year for those interested. Contact Bob for more information.
As for new business, thanks to all of you for emailing so much helpful information on our Green Building initiative. Special thanks to Mark Derman who seems to have the hook up on all things Green. The Green Earth Expo will be held May 14-18 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. It is sponsored by the Global Green Alliance and boasts of up to 600 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees. Promotional literature mentions symposium tracks ranging from water conservation, retailing, alternative energy, to health and wellness. For more info, www.globalgreenalliance.com. There will be a course offered on Energy Modeling for LEED in Orlando on May 15th. This course is being offered through the UF Treeo Center and costs $375/person. Contact is Laurie Brown at lbrown@treeo.ufl.edu>.
We now have 35 registered GBC members. Thank you very much to all of you. Membership certificates were distributed at the meeting. Our April meeting has been cancelled in favor of a Continuing Education class with 2 CE credit hours to be held on Tuesday, April 29th from 2-4pm. This class is sponsored by Bank of America and the cost is $25 for GBC members and $75 for non members. The class is entitled “Green Building Made Simple”. Dr. Jennifer Languell, Ph.D. is the instructor. See Lisa for more details. If you are not a GBC member, why not? Come see what all the fuss is about and get involved. We are still working on our mission statement and which shade of green we want to be. Looking forward to seeing everyone in May.
