On Tuesday, August 18, 95% of the FHB PAC supported candidates won their respective races across 20 contest primary races for the Florida House and Senate. Although other candidates may have received support from local HBAs or the NAHB, the FHB PAC team has assembled a complete overview for the contested races that the FHB PAC supported.

A couple of observations from last night’s primary elections from FHBA Director of Governmental Affairs Dane Bennett:

Incoming Senate President Wilton Simpson and Senate Majority flexed their muscles with the decisive victory of Rep. Ray Rodriquez over Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen. Fitzenhagen, a last minute entry into the race, was not bashful about taking on Republican Senate Leadership. Even going as far as attacking the Senate President Designee. Rodriquez won with a whopping 74.84 percent of the vote.

The Senate Democrats held-serve as all of their preferred candidates in contested primaries prevailed. The results set the table for competitive general elections in Senate Districts 9, 39 and perhaps 20 – all three of which are held by Republicans. Republicans control the Senate by a three vote margin (23-17).

Progressives are bragging about three victories, two of them ousting incumbent Democrats in House Districts 14 (Nixon over Daniels) and 88 (Hardy over Jacquet). Some are even speculating these progressive victories could be a spring board for Rep. Anna Eskamani to run for Governor in 2022.

As one hurdle is crossed, please keep in mind, the races for the General Election begin today! FHB PAC will continue the momentum with eyes on a successful November. Want to help pro-housing and pro-building candidates cross the finish line? Give to the FHB PAC today!
